Friday a.m., April 12th I receive a call from my sis out in So Cal telling me that mom had a stroke and is in the local ER with a bleeding brain. She was given maybe hours.

I pull together what I could think of, a suit included, load the IS and hit the road. Mom hit the road approximately 20 minutes after I did. Noted time for her departure: 12:12pm So Cal time, on the 12th.

The weather was pretty nice heading out of town with no real threat of pre-cip for the trip out.

The Sangre de Cristos in the background...

This is what the weather was like at my place just 2 days earlier. Backyard shot.

I met a fellow at a gas stop in Grants, NM named Chester Fields. We chatted briefly; he encouraged me to find religion as it was a major turnaround point for him in his life. He currently resides in TN, formerly of the Datil, NM area.

Since this was a mid-day take out for me and night driving is no longer my friend, I stay over in Seligman, AZ, getting in about 488 miles by days end. About the half way mark to San Clemente.

No sleep what-so-ever that night.  Undecided

I arrive Saturday in SC about 2pm, my sister already had the bulk of things lined up, scheduled, emails and phone calls made for the most part (all of which were milling around my thoughts last night versus any quality sleep time).

Celebration of Life Services slated for that following Saturday (a week) with the burial of mom’s cre-mains the Thursday following that Saturday. Some pretty healthy gaps in time.

It was truly great to see so many people show to pay their respects and support.

Mom had always enjoyed singing and dancing as well as onstage performing for others. For more years than I can count she, along with dad, had done stage shows entertaining our vets at the VA Hospitals, residents at nursing homes, and local civic centers, etc. They had a group of about 6 others that performed with them, calling themselves The Vagabonds. Mom made most of all of the costumes herself. Here she's in her late teens.

Anna Barbara (Barbie) Milburn was 85 as of January 29th and had been suffering from Alzhiemers for the passed 2 years.

My folks have always been very religious so if they’re correct, mom now sings and dances in paradise.

The trip allowed me to spend time with dad, my sister and bro-in-law, my son, my daughter’s family, my grandkids, and catch up with an old buddy.

My son Nick on his Shadow

Daughter & Granddaughter

For the stretch between the initial services and the burial, I spent a couple of nights at an old friends place in Riverside. Not really being able to chat at the services, we got a chance to catch up and he toured me around the area sharing some of the history and nice older areas. From his place I took the back way to San Clemente via Lake Mathews along Cajalco Road and Lake Elsinore along Ortega Hwy. Both were in good shape for some nice carving.

I made the return trip via Las Vegas, where my daughter lives, for a brief visit to share her 30th b-day. Also got there in time to join the grandson for his soccer practice! Man, the old joints just weren’t very supportive for the whole interactive soccer practicing…

Heading out from Vegas allows for a one good days run home. I hit my driveway about 6:30pm MT with no wet stuff, despite the dark clouds looming overhead.

Not a good start for my south then eastbound a.m. departure…

Trip Stat’s
For me: 2,080 miles round trip, being 15 days out. Good weather for the entire trip, although San Clemente was overcast for most of the days…

For mom:   An Eternity, (YMMV)

Friday I talked with Sheila at Robbers Cave State park.  It was time for me to sign the contract for the large room in the lodge. I declined the room because it does not look like there will be enough rooms rented this year to avoid the $250 for the room.  (I think we need 9 rooms to avoid the fee.) She said to let everyone know to tell her you are with the Valkyries when making reservations.  If we get enough we will have the room available if no one else has rented it for Saturday evening.
If you can make it down we’ll have a good time no matter how many show up!
Last year we all had dinner in Wilburton on Saturday night. We could do that again or have a cookout in the park.
Thoughts? Huh

Hi Everybody!
It's that time of the year, let's head for THE CAVE! Robbers Cave, of course.
I have talked to the park and the best dates for us is the17th through the 19th of May. Right now they have about 16 rooms in the inn open and some cabins too.
Karen and I will get there on Thursday and camp in one of the trailer spots right across from the office. We'll consider Friday the 17th a arrival day and Sunday the 19th as get-away day.
We'll have to find a good lunch place for Saturday because the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge is STILL closed again this year.
That's about all that is set up so far, I'll post more in the next few days. If you call the park for reservations be sure to tell them you are with the Valkyries!

This is going to be great!
